San Juan, population 33,000, is located in Hidalgo County in the state of Texas. The community was founded in 1909 and incorporated in 1917. It is named after its founder, John Closner. The city of San Juan is best known for being the location of the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan. The church is one of the largest and most visited in the Rio Grande Valley area, attracting over 25,000 visitors per week.
San Juan is surrounded by lush wildlife and was named one of Texas' Best "Backyard" Wildlife Habitats in 2008. Its early economy consisted mainly of fruit and vegetable packing, and shipping equipment manufacturing. Because of its location near several international bridges, San Juan has experienced much economic development. It still maintains an agricultural feel, hosting “pick grapefruit for free” days on occasion.
In recent San Juan legal news, the co-owner of a local trucking business was found guilty in a money laundering scheme. Business owner Maria Silva was sentenced to two years in prison under federal money laundering charges in December of 2008. Authorities discovered nearly $15,000 hidden in Silva’s car. She had agreed to transport the cash for a fee, stating that she needed money to help pay off her business debts. In addition to the prison sentence, the court sentenced Silva to three years supervision after her release, as well as $1,000 in fines. Her husband, co-owner of the business, was arrested in 2006 for transporting narcotics.
