> Texas Lawyers
Bell County was named for Texas’ third governor, Peter Hansborough Bell. Today, Bell County is home to about 265,000 residents, and is included in the Fort Hood-Killeen-Temple Metropolitan Statistical Area. Belton serves as Bell County’s county seat, while Holland is the major center of population.
The Bell County Commissioners Court is the governing body of Bell County, and is comprised of a county judge as well as four elected county commissioners. The Commissioners Court exercises both legislative and executive functions, and determines the budgets for all county departments. The Bell County Court System is made up of District Courts, a Constitutional County Court, Courts at Law, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts, each of which hears specific types of cases.
Recently, Bell County’s 27th District Court found defense attorney Charles Montgomery in contempt of court for attacking the judge, prosecutors and witnesses. This is the third time Montgomery has faced contempt charges over the past six years. In 2006, the 52nd District Court found Montgomery in contempt, though the charge was never pursued. In 2004, however, the 266th District Court charged Montgomery with obstructing justice and disrupting the dignity and order of the judicial process, for which he served six hours in jail. Montgomery indicated that he does not regret his actions, which he believes were in his client’s best interests.
