Learn More About Miami-Dade County, FL

Miami-Dade County, commonly called “Miami” or “Dade,” lies in southeastern Florida, and is home to about 2.4 million people. Miami-Dade County is the most heavily populated county in Florida, and, stretching across 1,946 square miles, is the largest county in the state.

The City of Miami serves as the county seat, and its downtown is the county’s primary business district. Eastern Miami-Dade County is known for its modern, urban landscape, while western Miami-Dade County is teeming with wildlife. Western Miami-Dade County is the only county in the nation to house two national parks, Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park.

Miami-Dade County is very culturally diverse. According to census bureau statistics, about 77% of county residents are White non-Hispanic, 61% are Latino, and 20% are Black. Further, almost 68% of Miami-Dade residents speak a language other than English in their home, and 50% of Miami-Dade residents were born outside the U.S.

Miami-Dade County functions under a distinct system of government, called a two-tier federation. Under this system, the city and county governments are not consolidated, as is the common practice. Instead, the city and county governments are classified as different tiers, and each is funded by different taxes and provides different services.

Miami-Dade County is also unique in that it’s the only county in Florida that does not elect a sheriff or create a Sheriff’s Office. Rather, this role is filled by the Miami-Dade Police Department, which is led by the Metropolitan Sheriff and Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department. Members of Miami-Dade’s Judicial Branch are considered part of the state government, and are elected separately from the county government.

Miami-Dade boasts one of the most extensive public library systems in the nation, and features the Miami-Dade County Law Library. Miami-Dade County also enrolls a large number of students in its many universities and colleges, including a number of prestigious law schools. Florida International University College of Law and the University of Miami School of Law attract numerous students across the state and nation each year. more information regarding suitable Maimi-Dade County Lawyers can be found thorough the Miami-Dade Justice Association.
