North Port is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Located in Sarasota County, Florida, it contained a population of approximately 23,000 in 2000, and has grown to over 54,000 by 2007.
In February 2010, a North Port resident was charged with multiple felony counts of threatening public servants, extortion, and intimidation by a written threat to kill or injure. Christopher Sheen, angry over losing his driver’s license due to unpaid fines, penned a letter to the Saratoga DMV office threatening state workers with a “day of reckoning.” Sheen demanded reinstatement of his driving privileges as well as $200 in compensation for his “aggravation, pain and suffering.” The letter also stated the office had seven days to comply, with a warning to be “careful who you test.” Sheehan admitted to police that he wrote the letter but claimed he was frustrated and wrote the letter as a way to resolve the license issue. The case is still pending.
Sheen’s case, as are all felonies committed within Sarasota County, is presided over by the 12th Judicial Circuit Court
. The court also adjudicates probate, juvenile delinquency, family matters, and civil claims over $15,000. Misdemeanors, traffic violations, and civil cases up to $15,000 are adjudicated by the Sarasota County Court
. Both courts are located in the city of Sarasota.
