Learn More About Sanford, NC

Sanford is a city and the county seat in Lee County, North Carolina, with a population of approximately 23,000 residents. In 1959, Sanford produced 10% of the bricks in the United States and was named “Brick Capital of the USA.” Today, it is still a large brick producer while expanding into other industries, such as textiles and biotech. The Wyeth Vaccines facility became the area’s largest employer in 2006. Other large employers in Sanford include 3M, Caterpillar Inc, Moen, and Tyson Foods.
In July 2008, Sherrill Normann Jr. filed suit against former Lee County School Superintendent James McCormick seeking monetary damages for alienation-of-affection. The suit alleged that McCormick had a two year affair with Normann Jr.’s wife, Margaret Normann. Margaret is a Lee County teacher. The suit stated that McCormick “induced [Margaret] to abandon the marital relationship.” In February 2009, the court dismissed the case.
Lee County belongs to the 11th Judicial District of North Carolina. It is divided into two courts – the Superior Court and the District Court. The Superior Court hears all felony criminal cases and civil cases involving more than $10,000, as well as misdemeanor and infraction appeals from District Court.
The District Court hears civil cases such as divorce, custody, child support and cases involving less than $10,000, along with criminal cases involving misdemeanors and infractions. The District Court also hears juvenile cases involving children under the age of 16 who are delinquent and children under the age of 18 who are undisciplined, dependent, neglected or abused.
