Prince William County, Virginia lies just 35 miles south of the nation’s capital Washington, D.C. Named for Prince William Augustus, English Duke of Cumberland, the county was first settled by English immigrants in 1653, before being officially founded in 1731. Prince William County would become the site of the first major land battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Manassas, during which the towns and residents suffered significant losses.
