Like many towns in the D.C. area, Rockville has a long and storied past. Evidence of Native American settlement goes back as far as 10,000 years ago. The town’s fortunes have changed dramatically since the Revolution, with the town briefly falling into Confederate hands during the Civil War, and changing names several times throughout the years since then. Today Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County and is the third largest city in the state.
A pro-choice advocacy organization in Rockville named Voices of Choice was recently sued in the U.S. District Court of Maryland for copyright infringement. Voices of Choice maintains a website on which it publishes the names, contact information, and photographs of people that it labels as "anti-abortion billies." One of the photos that Voices of Choice published on its website was taken and copyrighted by Stephanie Grooms and Voices of Choices took the photo and used it without first seeking Ms. Grooms’s permission. When Stephanie Grooms found out that Voices of Choices had used her copyrighted photograph on its websit without her permission, she filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the Rockville-based organization. Ms. Grooms is currently seeking $1.3 million in damages.
While this case is starting in federal court, many other Rockville cases begin in the city’s Circuit Court. Rockville is also home to Maryland’s District Court in Montgomery County. The District Court shares jurisdiction on several matters with the Circuit Court, but generally hears cases where less money is on the line. Experienced attorneys in Rockville will be familiar with the various rules and procedures of these courts, as well as local court staff, judges, and other lawyers in the area.
