SeaTac is a city in King County, Washington, with a population of approximately 26,000 residents. The name alludes to the city's location between Seattle and Tacoma. In June 2009, a group of Washington residents filed a class action lawsuit against SeaTac and 18 other Washington cities, claiming that these cities’ uses of red-light cameras were illegal, and that drivers caught by such cameras were being overcharged. The plaintiffs allege that drivers were paying millions of dollars more than they should because the cities intended for the cameras to be a moneymaking venture. The cities allege that the cameras improve public safety by deterring drivers from running lights at intersections. On March 3, 2010, a federal judge dismissed the case, ruling that the camera usage was not illegal.
Legal matters arising out of SeaTac will be heard by one of three courts adjudicating over King County. The SeaTac Municipal Court has authority over civil and traffic infractions, criminal misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and protection orders for victims of domestic violence. The King County District Court shares jurisdiction with the Municipal Court in all of the above matters, and also has authority over civil disputes not exceeding $50,000. Except for traffic infractions, the District Court shares its jursidiction with the King County Superior Court. The Superior Court also presides over adoptions, civil disputes over $50,000, dissolutions of marriage and other domestic relations issues, felony charges, juvenile matters, and probate matters.
