South Holland is a village first settled in 1846 by South Holland, Netherland immigrants. During the period, these Dutch settlers were seeking religious freedom and economic prosperity. South Holland is located in the south suburb of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Home to an estimated 22,030 people, South Holland was one of the “Most Livable Metro-Area Suburb” of the Chicago metropolitan area in 2007.
In the 1940s, the village of South Holland was known as the “Onion Set Capital of the World”. The town was originally called de Laage Prairie or Low Prairie because it was built on low ground near the Calumet River different from another Dutch settlement on higher ground called de Hooge Prairie.
