Huntsville is home to about 171,000 residents, making it the most populous city in northern Alabama. Huntsville lies in both Limestone and Madison Counties, and serves as the county seat of the latter. Nestled in the Tennessee River Valley, Huntsville is bordered by a number of large hills and mesas.
Huntsville’s economy relies heavily on the aerospace and military technology sectors. Cummings Research Park, the second-biggest research park in the country, is located in Huntsville. Additionally, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the US Army Aviation and Missile Command make Huntsville their home. According to a 2005 Forbes Magazine report, the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area employed the largest percentage of engineers per total employment.
Recently, Huntsville resident Christopher Lafever filed a lawsuit against the Huntsville Police Department for use of excessive force, false arrest, and assault and battery. Two men claiming to be police officers arrived in a parking lot owned by Mr. Lafever, who told them to leave because he did not believe that they were officers. Refusing to leave, the police officers allegedly beat up Mr. Lafever and sprayed him with pepper spray when he fought back using a stun gun. Eventually, the officers arrested Mr. Lafever and took him to jail. The trial is currently ongoing.
