Are There Alternatives to the Virginia State Bar Association?

When looking for a lawyer, it can be difficult to know where to begin.  Attorney referral services can provide a good first step.  These services find lawyers in your area that are experienced in the area of law you are concerned with.

The Virginia State Bar Association offers an attorney referral service.  This service can be reached by calling a toll-free number.  After providing information about yourself and your case, you will receive a lawyer referral.  This referral service is free, and the fee for your first visit with the lawyer is only $35.  However, this fee must be paid at the time of the referral.  Also, only 1 lawyer referral is offered.

Many people prefer to search for a local Virginia lawyer by using county bar associations.  However, there is not much information about county bar association services in Virginia.  The Virginia State Bar does not mention these at all.  The American Bar Association (ABA) does give contact information for county referral services on its website, but it only lists 4 that are available in Virginia.

Finally, in addition to Bar Association services there are numerous private attorney referral services.  These are usually national or regional in scope, and can be accessed online.  Among the benefits of these services are multiple lawyer referrals, and the referrals often include information about the lawyers such as education and work history.
