Oregon City is located in Clackamas County in the state of Oregon. Incorporated in 1844, it was founded in 1829 by Dr. John McLaughlin, also known as “the father of Oregon”. Its current population is about 31,500.
The city is famous for being the last stop of the historic “Oregon Trail”, and for being the first incorporated city west of the Rockies. Today it is the headquarters of several high-tech and manufacturing businesses. Previously its economy consisted almost entirely of forestry and paper mill industries. Many paper mills used to operate in the city but today only one mill is still in operation.
In December of 2009, the last paper mill company in Oregon City filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Code. The company, Blue Heron Co., was formed recently in 2000 but operates on the city’s oldest industrial site. The mill has been producing paper since 1830 when Dr. Laughlin himself blasted the mill site. Blue Heron cited increased foreign competition and a decrease in demand for as its reasons for filing bankruptcy. As the one of the city’s largest employers, it has nearly $50 million in assets and anywhere from $10- $50 million in liabilities. The bankruptcy petition was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Oregon.
Filing for bankruptcy involves in-depth research into several overlapping legal issues. Whether a business is large or small, legal counsel is necessary for maintaining business operations. Using LegalMatch.com can assist you or your business by matching you with an attorney for free. As the county seat, Oregon City is home to many lawyers, and LegalMatch can help you find the right one.
Most claims in Oregon City are heard in the Oregon City Municipal Court. The municipal court has jurisdiction over city and state law offenses, but does not hear felony or DUI cases. The court can give information about administrative manners, but they cannot provide legal advice. LegalMatch can help you find an attorney if you need legal advice.
