Frederick County is the largest county in the State of Maryland. The two largest employers that support this community are BP Solar and the U.S. Army’s Fort Detrick. BP Solar is one of the largest solar panel producing companies in the nation and supports the State of Maryland’s commitment to life sciences. Maryland is the hub for life sciences, boasting 350 biotechnology firms including Johns Hopkins University. Not only does Frederick support the biotechnology firms but it also holds some historical sites such as the train depot where Abraham Lincoln made his Civil War speech. The county balances its rich historical past while recognizing the great strides in biotechnology.
Recently in Frederick County, a Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Aaron Cote, was convicted of sexually abusing an altar boy. During the course of the trial startling evidence was produced showing that there were allegations against Rev. Cote dating back to 1988. Even while stationed in Peru allegations were filed against Rev. Cote citing inappropriate behavior. The St. Pius V. Church continued to let the Mr. Cote serve as associate pastor even after molestation charges were filed in 2003. The county responded with shock when they discovered that Mr. Cote was sentenced to 10 years probation, five of which will be supervised, and he will have to register as a sex offender under the court order. Although the residents of Frederick County were expecting Rev. to spend some time in prison, most were satisfied that he was charged and put on probation.
Rev. Cote’s case showed Frederick County lawyers practicing complex issues of criminal law in the court room. Frederick County lawyers practice not only in criminal, but also family, business, agricultural, juvenile and real estate law.
