Duval County lies in northeastern Florida and is home to about 850,000 people. One of Duval County’s most prominent cities, Jacksonville, is also the county seat. Duval County was named for William Pope DuVal, who served as Florida’s governor from 1822-1834. Duval County currently serves as the location for a number of institutions of higher learning, including Trinity Baptist College, the University of North Florida, and Jacksonville University.
Many lawyers in Duval County belong to the Jacksonville Bar Association, an organization that hosts educational and charitable events, such as the Senior Holiday Project and charity golf tournaments. Additionally, lawyers in Duval County have the opportunity to join the Daniel Webster Perkins Bar Association, which works to combat past and present discrimination.
Recently, Duval County resident Andrew Flaherty filed a legal claim against the Duval County Tax Collector’s Office for issuing him a state identification card with a serious error on it. When Mr. Flaherty obtained his state identification card shortly after moving to Jacksonville, it contained seven numerical digits that were located on the bottom right. These numbers on a Florida state id serve as a way for police and other members of the public to identify people such as Mr. Flaherty as registered sex offenders. However, Mr. Flaherty is not a sex offender and it was humiliating for him to have even his own family members think that he was a registered sex offender. Thus, Mr. Flaherty has sued the Duval County Tax Collector’s Office for defamation stemming from the error that it made with his id.
