The city of Aiken is the located in and is the county seat of Aiken County. The city is also home to the University of South Carolina at Aiken. Starting in the late 19th century and into the 20th century, the city of Aiken became a popular wintering spot for many of the wealthy from the Northeast. In 1931, the then speaker of the house, Nicholas Longworth, came to Aiken to be with some friends. While there, he came down with pneumonia and eventually died there.
